A few dozen Sacramento soccer fans greeted the league contingent at Sacramento International Airport Thursday afternoon.
As they chanted in the background, Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott told reporters he’s excited to learn more about Sacramento as a soccer town
“We came, obviously, to meet with a number of people in the community, understand what’s been happening with the Republic, obviously, which has been a big story, learn a little bit about what the opportunity for a stadium might be," says Abbott.
Fans have packed games this year in the first season of Sacramento’s minor league team, F-C Republic.
Republic executives are part of a group hoping to bring a major league soccer team to Sacramento and build a stadium in the downtown Railyards development. The city of Elk Grove also hopes to lure the M-L-S.
Both cities are competing with several others across the country for one of two potential expansion teams.
