There’s nothing like a deadline to force action.
Gov. Jerry Brown and the California Legislature waited as long as they could to finalize the $7.5 billion water bond on the November ballot now known as Proposition 1.
As a result, the Secretary of State’s office had to mail out two different voter information guides -- one with everything but the water bond. A supplemental guide a couple of weeks later that focused solely on Prop 1.
The cost to state taxpayers -- $2.85 million.
The Legislature and governor did not set aside any money to pay for the extra pamphlet, so the Secretary of State’s office must absorb the cost from its own budget.
The office says it plans to seek reimbursement.
