Democratic Senator Ricardo Lara wants to create the Office of New Americans to help undocumented immigrants better integrate into society. He will introduce legislation today. The office would help immigrants tap into resources California makes available to them.
Jesse Melgar is with Lara’s office. He says the New American's office will also help with fraud prevention, a concern made more important by President Barack Obama’s recent action on immigration.
"There will be a million Californians who are going to be impacted by the president’s executive action," he says. "And many of these individuals are often subject to scams and a lot of folks who try to profit from their immigration status."
It’s estimated there are 2.5 million undocumented immigrants living in California, the largest population in the country.
