Thousands Expected To Participate In California International Marathon

More than 5,000 hotel reservations are credited to California International Marathon. Brenda Kirian is with one of the hotels near the race finish line - the Hyatt Regency in downtown. Kirian says runners are a pretty mellow lot.

"Everyone heads to bed early Saturday night," says Kirian. And then Sunday morning it's a ghost town around here because they all catch the shuttle early." The shuttle to Folsom where the race starts.

The marathon will trigger rolling street closures along the course. But CIM's John Schumacher says most locals are okay with that. In fact, he says a lot of folks like to be on the sidelines cheering the runners on...like last year when a runner got hurt near the finish line.

"She broke her foot at the 25 mile mark," explains Shumacher, "and several spectators who live nearby helped her out, gave her some tea, a blanket and crutches to get to the finish."

About 15,000 people are registered to take part in the marathon.

The race will trigger rolling road closures. That may bother some motorists. But Mike Testa with the Sacramento Convention and Visitor's Bureau says CIM gives the community a boost.

"To be able to host an event like CIM is a very positive thing for people who live here," says Testa. "And while not everybody is a marathon runner there's a big part of the public that is part of that community and if not runners themselves very supportive of it."

CIM's economic impact to hotels, restaurants and shops is projected to be around $7 million.

Numerous road closures will be in place on Sunday, December 7.  Here is a mile-by-mile look at closures along the course from near Folsom Dam to the state Capitol:

Folsom-Auburn Road north of the start will be closed to through traffic at Eureka Road from 4:30 a.m.-8 a.m. Only vehicles taking runners to the start will be allowed past Eureka.

10^th Street between L & N will be closed beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, December 6. The finish-line area around 8th, 9th, 10th and Capitol Mall will be closed from 4:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, December 7.

Course monitors will occasionally allow cross traffic if there are large gaps between runners.

Yolo Bus Service During CIM

On Sunday, December 7 2014, between 7:45am and 1:45pm Downtown Sacramento will be hosting the California International Marathon. Due to this event, Yolobus routes going through L, N, 8^th, 9^th, and a portion of Capitol Mall will be rerouted for the duration of the event.

40 (West Sacramento Local), 42A (Intercity Clockwise), 42B (Intercity Counter-Clockwise), and 240 (West Sacramento Shuttle)
