California Attorney General Kamala Harris has issued several consumer alerts warning of scams targeting immigrants and their families. Harris says scams could center on the President’s recent immigration executive action or on the state beginning to issue driver licenses to undocumented immigrants.
Mari Lopez is with Vision y Compromiso, which works to provide Latinos with access to healthcare. She says immigrants can be vulnerable because they’re still learning to navigate systems in a foreign country.
"It’s folks who target individuals filled with promises of helping them in a more streamlined matter to adjust their immigration status," she says.
Lopez says immigrants should do their research and talk with trusted community members before paying for services.
