(AP) - A popular dog park at Lake Tahoe has been shut down temporarily due to concerns about an outbreak of parvovirus.
The South Lake Tahoe Humane Society said in a statement Tuesday that 11 cases of the potentially fatal canine disease have been reported in the last 10 days.
Executive Director Niki Congero told Lake Tahoe News the park on Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe will be closed seven to 10 days so they clean the park as a precautionary measure.
Parvo is transmitted through animal feces and contaminated objects, including toys and bedding. It can spread to coyotes, but is not transmittable to cats or people.
Symptoms in dogs start with high fever, lethargy and loss of appetite. They can escalate to vomiting, bloody diarrhea and death.
