The City of Elk Grove is still moving ahead with plans for a large soccer complex. That's despite losing out to Sacramento and several other cities in a bid to compete for a major league soccer team.
Soccer is a big deal in Elk Grove. Mayor Gary Davis says Elk Grove has the largest youth soccer program in the country with 6,500 players.
"People love soccer in our community," says Davis. "They're already traveling around the country going to tournaments and yet we're not able to host tournaments in our city."
That could change soon. The city recently bought 100 acres along Grant Line Road for a soccer complex and stadium. The problem is, the property is outside city limits. Tonight, the city council will decide whether to ask Sacramento County for permission to annex the land.
Davis says a soccer complex would be a huge economic driver.
"It'll be near the proposed mall," says Davis. "It'll definitely generate heads and beds for hotels and maybe even see some new hotels pop up because of it."
Davis says the property could also be a potential site for the Sacramento County Fair.
