Jennifer Cariglio of Tracy Public Works opens up the belly of the beast...which is aptly called Big Belly.
"So in here we have the trash compactor," she says as she points out features of the half trash compactor/half recycling container that will be placed on city streets.
Cariglio says solar panels on top make Big Belly the smartest trash can ever.
"We have notifications within the software that identfies when they are ready to be emptied instead of it being on a set schedule," explains Cariglio.
She says that saves time and money and prevents trash from overflowing into the streets.
"That's probably a good thing," says Tracy resident Chris Fosdahl.
"[Rich Ibarra] So is this the way to go in Tracy, I guess, the future?"
"It does seem like a good idea yeah," Fosdahl says.
Money from recycling programs has paid for six of the containers.
And if Big Belly proves a success, Tracy may be in the market for more.
