Covered California Sends Out 100,000 Inaccurate Tax Forms

(AP) - State officials are apologizing after sending about 100,000 incorrect household tax forms to people who purchased private insurance through Covered California.

The incorrect forms could delay or force consumers to amend their tax filings.

The state's health exchange says it learned last month that it had inaccurate coverage information and is in the process of sending out revised 1095-A forms.

The mistake brings another headache for people struggling to understand the new tax penalties. The federal health reform requires most people to have insurance or face a tax penalty.

Covered California spokesman James Scullary says the state sent email and postcard notices to people who received the incorrect forms. Scullary says the exchange is sorry for the inconvenience.

In all, the state sent out 800,000 forms for the first time.
