Weekend Storm Expected To Bring Thunderstorms To Sacramento Region

A storm system that's headed to Sacramento and the Sierra Friday and Saturday could bring with it thunderstorms and even hail. 

Brooke Bingaman is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.  She says the valley will probably see about a tenth of an inch of rain, with the foothills getting a quarter to half an inch.  Bingaman says thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon - and hail, which is unusual in Sacramento - could affect drivers.

"Especially if a thunderstorm just sits in one spot for a little while and the hail just dumps and then you have an inch of accumulation of small hail, so that could make driving conditions really treacherous, because all of a sudden a car drives through and it's basically hitting tiny balls of ice," says Bingaman.

Bingaman says snow is likely starting around 3500 feet, with accumulation of four to eight inches above 5500 feet.  She says at the crests, up to a foot of snow is possible.

Another storm is headed to northern California Monday and Tuesday.
