March 18, 7 A.M. (AP) - Authorities in Northern California say at least three people were killed and four people were wounded in an apparent drive-by shooting at a convenience store.
Stockton police say a woman died Tuesday on a sidewalk outside the store and two men died at a hospital.
Four others found inside the market were transported to hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known early Wednesday.
The Stockton Record reports that police are interviewing witnesses, some of whom said they heard up to 40 gunshots.
Dozens of people gathered in the area after the shooting, and additional officers had to help control the crowd. Officials say the area is known for gang activity.
Officer Joe Silva called it one of the worst mass shootings in the city's recent history.
