(AP) - A Nevada Assembly committee is expected to decide on two bills requiring voters to show identification in order to cast a ballot.
The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee is scheduled to vote Thursday on AB253 and AB266.
The measures would require voters to show a government-issued identification card, such as a driver's license, or an identification card specifically created for the purpose of voting.
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles would be required to create and distribute free voter cards to a person without another form of identification.
The measures were the subject of a spirited hearing March 17. Witnesses disagreed on whether Nevada suffered from a voter fraud problem and whether an ID requirement would disenfranchise poor and marginalized citizens.
