The Sacramento Sheriff's Department says one of its officers shot and wounded a man near a convenience store on Watt Avenue and Elkhorn Boulevard.
The department says officers were responding to a call of a man harassing a woman in the store's parking lot.
According to the department, the suspect dropped a backpack and ran when deputies arrived.
Officers say the man pulled a gun and shot at a person who tried to block the suspect's path.
The department says more people chased the man through an empty field. The man fired at least one more shot toward those people. Officers say a deputy then shot the suspect once.
The man dropped the gun and was taken into custody. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening wound.
Once he is medically cleared, the suspect will be booked into the Sacramento Main Jail.
The investigation into the shooting will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division and by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
The department says that is now standard for all officer-involved shooting incidents within the county.
Under department policy, the deputy will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The deputy is a nineteen-year veteran of the department, currently assigned to Field and Investigative Services.
No one else was injured.
