California tax revenues have soared past projections for the critical month of April – with several days yet to go. But the state’s overall budget situation is very much still up in the air.
What we do know is that California’s K-12 schools and community colleges will get billions of extra dollars in the upcoming state budget. What we don’t know is how much everything else will get.
A couple of weeks ago, Jason Sisney with the non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s Office feared the non-education side of the budget might actually face a deficit. Now, he’s more optimistic.
“If the state’s complicated budget formulas play out in just the right way, it’s possible there could be a small amount extra,” Sisney says.
So at this point, we’ve already shifted away from ‘more likely to be bad’ to ‘more likely to be neutral’ – and we might get to ‘more likely to be good.’
“I think that’s fair to say, right.”
Sisney says any increase for non-education programs would likely be just a few hundred million dollars.
