Former Sacramento Congressman Vic Fazio wants more school kids to visit the wetlands named after him. The Yolo Bypass - Vic Fazio Wildlife Area is visible from the Yolo Causeway stretch of Interstate 80 between West Sacramento and Davis. The 16,000 acre site is part of the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds. Today Fazio helped kick-off a fund drive titled: "Vision for the Flyway."
"We need buses," said Fazio on Insight with Beth Ruyak, "that will take kids, who may not have a lot of money in the family, to subsidize trips or may not come from school districts that can afford it. We want to make sure that kids from across the region, regardless of where they live, will be abe to access the basin. And we think that frankly is a very good way of not only expanding usage but making sure that everybody knows that this asset is theirs."
The goal is to raise $1.5 million over three years. The money will also be used to pay for more environmental research in the bypass.
