This morning marks a major construction milestone in south Sacramento. Earlier today, the City of Sacramento opened a new freeway interchange at Interstate 5 and Cosumnes River Boulevard.
Nader Kamal with the city's Public Works department says the interchange will allow work crews to start building a shopping center at a housing and retail project called Delta Shores.
"This portion we are opening only to allow the developers for Delta Shore to start their development," explains Kamal. "There's almost 800 acres of area that needs to be developed. And this opening the interchange will allow them to start that process."
Kamal says the new interchange won't do much to ease traffic congestion - at least not yet.
"Because people think opening the interchange means opening the entire job. The entire job's not going to be done until the end of the year. So we'd like to ask people using the freeway, just be patient until the entire job is done."
Kamal says the entire job is scheduled to be done in September. That's when the larger Cosumnes River Boulevard Expansion and Interchange Project will be complete. The three-and-a-half mile roadway extension between Franklin and Freeport boulevards is still under construction.
