San Joaquin County Superior Court sent out jury summons to about 140,000 people last year. They had to call in every morning and afternoon to find out if they had to show up. Court Executive Officer Rosa Junqueiro says now, a new system notifies jurors by text message.
"You get a text notification you're going to pick up your phone and look at it. We believe it's a much easier way to remember your jury duty service."
And Junqueiro says jurors can check in at the courthouse in just a few seconds using a computer kiosk.
"They come in, scan, couple clicks of the mouse, then they can go ahead and sit down."
Only a handful of counties in the state have begun to use text messaging this year, including Stanislaus, Placer, and Lake Counties.
