Today was the beginning of a month-long series of firefighting drills along the American River Bike Trail in Sacramento. The training requires that fires be intentionally set.
Roberto Padilla is with the Sacramento City Fire Department. He says the department never wants to discourage anyone from calling 911 in the event of a fire...however:
"We do want you to consider the fact that there are some training burns going on," says Padilla.
He says the training includes a technique called firing operations - or using fire to fight fire.
"Today's burn took place behind Costco near Woodlake Village," explains Padilla, "so a lot of the smoke could be seen in the Highway 160 area."
He says hundreds of firefighters from multiple agencies will be training along the American River Parkway between Woodlake Village and Cal Expo through mid-June.
