California regulators are responding to the drought by adopting tighter landscaping rules for new construction and renovation. That means new water limits for residential, commercial, school and hospital lawns and other plantings.
State regulators have spent the last two months developing the new emergency rules approved Friday in response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s drought executive order.
“We’re probably going to be seeing a lot less grass going into new home construction in the coming months – which I’m sure is part of the intent here,“ says Bob Raymer with the California Building Industry Association. “But we’ve warmed up to that. We realize it. This is an emergency, and so we’re going to work with the governor and the administration to get this done.”
Under the state’s regulatory system, the new rules won’t take full effect until the end of this year.
