The Sacramento Planning Commission has approved a high-rise development downtown after a lengthy meeting Thursday night.
The buildings would be built in the area currently occupied by the 15-story Capitol Towers and a number of low-rise villas. The location is at N and P Streets between 5th and 7th Streets.
Capitol Towers would remain, but the surrounding buildings would be replaced by new 24-story apartment towers. Opponents argue that it would change the feel of the neighborhood and destroy the tree canopy, but supporters said the project was key to developing downtown.
The issue heads next to the full city council.
