If a bill before the California Legislature becomes law, the state would give the Tower Bridge to Sacramento and West Sacramento. The cities would also get $10 million.
The money would pay not only for bridge maintenance, but also for part of the cities' proposed streetcar project.
West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon says the state has been trying to give away the bridge for years.
"The state's interest has been in finding an arrangement both cities would agree to for the transfer of the bridge and the state does want to be a partner in the streetcar project just like all of the property owners in the area," says Cabaldon.
Property owners along the proposed street car line in both cities have approved an assessment worth $30 million to help fund the project. But, Sacramento voters along the proposed streetcar route voted against the idea. The cities are working to find other methods of funding.
