(AP) - California drivers are getting a taste of history as the state starts to reissue its black license plates, which were originally issued in the 1960s.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the Department of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that it will start handing out the black plates reminiscent of the ones issued from 1963 to 1969.
State Assemblyman Mike Gatto of Glendale introduced the California Legacy License Plate Program because many car enthusiasts with respect for old-model rides connect the classic vehicles to the black plate.
The only difference with these plates is that they will be sprayed with a clear coating that will allow them to be seen at night.
The reissued plates, which cost $50, have been the fastest specialty plates ever to reach 7,500 pre-orders.
