Stockton Metropolitan Airport may begin international flights to Mexico. The proposal could also expand domestic air service.
Stockton Metropolitan Airport has only one carrier, Allegiant Air, which flies to Las Vegas and Phoenix.
The airport is looking to borrow almost $10 million in Measure K transportation money to build a customs station that would allow it to begin international flights.
San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors Chair Katherine Miller says such a move might also draw other airlines to provide more service.
"We would really like to have more direct flights out of Stockton, in addition to that, love to be able to have opportunity to get folks to initiate their flight here and get them to a major hub that could connect," she says.
Miller says the airline would start small to see if service is economically feasible with three flights per week to Mexico.
The proposal is included for consideration in this year's proposed budget.
