(AP) - The California Democratic Party says a staffer did not violate campaign reporting laws by accepting edible marijuana and an e-cigarette filled with hash oil from a marijuana lobbyist.
The aide, Josh Drayton, works for the party's Senate Democrats. BuzzFeed News first reported on the exchange, saying Drayton told the lobbyist that Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon needed to learn more about marijuana.
Party spokesman Michael Soller said Wednesday that Drayton is assigned to the party's Senate Democrats, dealing with campaigns. He said Drayton does not have a legislative or policy role and, therefore, is not required to report gifts.
Drayton declined to comment through the party.
Soller said the party respects employees' privacy on personal time. He declined to say whether Dayton has a medical marijuana prescription.
