The California Department of Public Health says there are more cases of syphilis among women, pregnant women and newborns over the past two years.
The number of cases more than doubled to almost 600 cases between 2012 and 2014. The Department of Public Health has not identified a cause for the increase in congenital syphilis, which is often connected to poverty and lack of access to health care.
The department is partnering with the health care community to work to increase enrollment for women.
