Federal Grant Will Help Sacramento State Disabled Students

Sacramento State announced Monday that it's getting a $1.3 million federal grant to help disabled students over the next five years.

Melissa Repa is with Sac State's Services to Students with Disabilities. She says the money will help pay for additional instruction, assistance and counseling.

"One of the things we're planning for the fall,” says Repa, “is a panel of students with disabilities really describing the experiences that they've had transitioning to Sacramento State."

Repa says the panel will help new students entering the campus community.

"Students with disabilities, they experience a lot of challenges academically, socially, culturally, physically," says Repa. "And really hearing from other students who have experienced success in higher education is going to help to enhance those new students’ experience as they begin the transition to Sacramento State themselves."

Sac State's Services for Students with Disabilities has more than 800 students. The new grant will help about 140 students each year.
