The U.S. Senate committee is considering national legislation to curb campus sexual assault. University of California President Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee today UC has implemented a number of recommendations made by a university task force.
"The most important I think is we’ve established the independent, confidential advocate on every campus of the University of California," she says. "We’ve funded it, we’ve support it, we’ve trained it."
The advocate will work with assault victims.
And UC is considering how to deal with people accused of assault as well.
"One of the issues we’re looking at is what kind of support do we provide to a respondent in addition to a complainant," Napolitano says. "Right now we provide the support to the complainant."
Earlier this month a court in San Diego ruled a UCSD student was unfairly suspended because he was not given a fair hearing after being accused of assault.
And in June three women filed suit against the UC Regents for failing to properly follow-up on sexual assault complaints they made at UC Berkeley.
