Sacramento State's ban would have included smoking, tobacco chewing and the use of electronic cigarettes. Now, the university will start an informational campaign this fall instead of a ban.
Luis Kischmischian, communications and marketing specialist with the Division of Student Affairs at Sacramento State, says the CSU Chancellor is now considering a system-wide policy on tobacco use, much like the one in place at the University of California.
"The Chancellor's office actually has requested to meet and confer with the rest of the CSUs in the system and put our campaign on a pause,"says Kischmischian.
In the meantime, smoking is allowed at Sacramento State, but not within 20 feet of a building, in Hornet Stadium or on major walkways.
CSU Fullerton banned smoking, but not all tobacco use, in 2013.
The CSU is in the final stages of developing a system-wide policy on tobacco. The CSU says a final proposal will be presented to the Chancellor in early fall.
The UC policy bans smoking, smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes at all UC facilities, whether owned or leased, including parking lots. Sale and advertising of tobacco products is also prohibited.
