Brown Urged To Make State-Issued Credit Cards More Secure

The California Retailers Association, the California Grocers Association and the Latino Consumer Federation are calling on California to switch to a more secure kind of credit card. The coalition has written a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown urging him to switch all state-issued cards from magnetic strip to micro-chip and PIN technology.

Roger Salazar represents the coalition.

"Requiring a chip and PIN combination offers a two-step verification process that is nearly impossible to clone," he says. "And the results speak for themselves around the world."

Salazar says the United Kingdom saw a nearly 70 percent drop in in-store fraud when chip and PIN cards became standard there. 

Last year President Barack Obama signed an executive order requiring all federally-issued cards to begin using chip and PIN technology.
