American River College in Sacramento says it's getting a big boost from the federal government. The community college is receiving three separate grants totaling nearly $3.5 million.
"It's federal funding really focused on first-generation college-going students," including military veterans says ARC's Betty Low.
"And we have a huge population of veteran students," says Low. "So we're really excited about all three grants."
The money will go to the college's Journey program which helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds move through the academic pipeline.
Low says the money will not only help first-generation students, but also low-income students interested in science, technology, engineering and math.
The grants will defray the cost of resources for about 350 students, including: tutoring and academic advising.
