(AP) - Short-term rental housing websites such as Airbnb and VRBO will be required to warn users that they may be violating their leases under a new California law.
Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday that he signed SB761 by Democratic Sen. Isadore Hall of Compton.
It requires Airbnb-type websites to notify tenants that they may be at risk of legal action or eviction if they sublet their homes. Some San Francisco tenants have received eviction notices for violating prohibitions on short-term renting.
The bill was sponsored by the California Apartment Association, which says vacation rentals put other tenants in danger by bringing unscreened people into complexes.
Airbnb's terms and conditions already tell hosts to check their leases, but they don't mention evictions.
The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2016.
