Sac City College Shooting Victim Identified, Search For Suspect Continues

3:40 p.m. The man who police believe shot and killed a Sacramento City College student and wounded two other people is still on the run. One of the victims has been arrested. 

One student died at the scene and a former student was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

Traci Trapini with the Sacramento Police Department says the student who was arrested was the least injured of the three.

He was held in a squad car while the others were treated for their injuries.

"That victim who was detained with the graze wound was actually involved in the altercation and had produced a knife during the altercation."

He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. He is also on a parole hold.

The department says the victims have been cooperating with the investigation.

Police say they do not know the name of the suspect.

The victims described him as a Pacific Islander wearing a white shirt and beige shorts.

10:47 a.m. Police announced Friday that they've arrested one of the subjects involved in the altercation that lead to a deadly shooting at Sacramento City College.

The man, who sustained a minor wound, was identified as Rico Ridgeway. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Sacramento County Jail Friday morning. The suspected shooter remains at-large.

10 a.m. Officials have identified the victim in Thursday's shooting at Sacramento City College. 

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office say the vicitm was Roman P. Gonzalez, 25, of Sacramento. 

Sacramento Police continue to search for the suspected gunman, who is described as as a male adult Pacific Islander wearing a white t-shirt and beige cargo shorts. 

9:30 a.m. - Sacramento Police say they've booked one of the men who was injured in yesterday's fatal shooting at Sacramento City College on an unrelated violation of parole.

The shooting, at a campus parking lot, left one man dead and two injured. Meanwhile, the suspected gunman is still at-large.

Multiple media organizations say the County Coroner's Office confirmed the man killed is Roman Gonzalez, 25.

Investigators say they're not ruling out gang activity in yesterday's incident. Police described the suspect as a male adult Pacific Islander wearing a white t-shirt and beige cargo shorts.

Student Matthew Gershanoff has been taking classes at city college for two years, and says he's more concerned now about campus security.

"The campus is a pretty open campus," he says. "I feel like we should get more security, maybe the body scanners or like the metal detectors to see if somebody has a potential weapon."

Students and faculty got text messages and emails from the campus alert system around 4:40 p.m., about forty minutes after the shooting.

Sacramento Police provided this update Friday morning:

8 a.m. Classes are in session Friday at Sacramento City College. Thursday afternoon, the campus was put on lockdown after a shooting left one person dead and two others injured. 

Campus spokesman Rick Brewer says the shooting began as a dispute between a group of men.

"At some point during this verbal argument, one of the individuals pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and proceeded to shoot the other three individuals," he says.

One person was killed, and another person was taken to a hospital. A third victim was grazed by a bullet and required no treatment. Police are still looking for the gunman.

Katherine Stewart is a student at the college studying to be a vet technician. Stewart says she was in class when a professor told them the school was on lockdown, which she described as a harrowing experience.

"Nerve-wracking because usually you only see it on TV," she says. "I didn't think it would happen in this area, I didn't think it would happen at my school. So, I was a little nervous. I'm still kind of, because I guess they haven't found the guy."

According to a post from the Los Rios Police Department, chaplains and counselors will be available on campus starting at 9 a.m. Friday at the Multi-Cultural Center. 

Sacramento Police Department released the following statement describing the incident:

On Thursday, September 3, 2015, at approximately 3:59 p.m., officers responded to the 3800 block of Freeport Boulevard regarding a report of a shooting. The shooting occurred in a parking lot just north of Sutterville Road, on the south edge of the Sacramento City College campus. Three victims were located in the area of the scene with injuries.

One shooting victim was fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene. A second victim was injured and transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive. The third victim sustained a minor wound that did not require medical treatment.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a physical altercation, between two groups of subjects, further escalated when a knife and gun were produced by the involved parties. It is believed that the victim of the fatal shooting was involved in the altercation and is a student at the College. The involvement of gang activity is not being ruled out.

The shooting suspect is believed to have fled the scene and is described as a male adult Pacific Islander wearing a white t-shirt and beige cargo shorts.

Sacramento Police Department Homicide detectives are lead in the investigation; working in conjunction with the Los Rios Community College Police Department.
