The income tax increase for wealthy Californians would remain in place for 12 more years under a newly proposed ballot initiative announced today. The Alliance for a Better California is made up of public employees, teachers and school employees, among others. It is attempting to extend the 2012 income tax increase approved by voters. The Prop 30 quarter-cent sales tax increase would not be extended and would expire in 2016 as scheduled.
The group must collect more than half-a-million signatures to qualify the Constitutional Amendment for the 2016 ballot. If approved by voters, the income tax revenue would be dedicated to classroom expenses for public schools and community colleges and could not be redirected.
