California would be among the first states to require children younger than two to ride in rear-facing car seats under a bill on Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk.
Current law mandates the practice for babies under the age of one.
Asm. Cristina Garcia, D-Bell Gardens, says her measure would align with new recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“We know that there’s so much danger, there’s so many cars and so much of our lives revolves around so much driving,“ Garcia says. “We should be doing everything we can to reduce the impact on a child and the lifelong injuries that they could be living with.”
No interest groups filed opposition against the bill. It was opposed, however, by several Republicans in the Legislature.
The bill includes a one-year grace period before it would go into effect.
Brown has until mid-October to decide on the measure.
