Brown Signs Law Allowing For Concealed Weapons Ban On School, College Campuses

California schools and colleges can now ban concealed weapons on campus. Governor Jerry Brown signed a measure over the weekend that allows the new prohibitions, even if the person carrying the gun has a permit to do so.

Randy Burba is president of the California College and University Police Chiefs Association, which co-sponsored the bill. He says campus environments don't mix well with weapons.

"You got 18 to 22-year-olds, individuals who are living in a community environment, with open doors, open windows," says Burba. "There's lots of alcohol and drugs and partying and things that go on. It's just, it's a different environment."

The new law allows colleges and universities to set their own rules – and some can choose to allow those with permits to carry a gun. But concealed firearms will be banned on elementary and high school campuses statewide.

Some gun-rights groups are now threatening to challenge the decision in court.
