(AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old man has drowned after being submerged in Sacramento river waters near Tiscornia Beach.
The Sacramento Bee reports that Jagjit Basra disappeared Sunday afternoon in the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers for almost an hour before his unconscious body was recovered.
Jonathan Williams, a battalion chief for the Sacramento Fire Department, says several people on jet skis and boats had been looking for the man prior to the arrival of firefighters. Divers and helicopters later joined the search efforts.
The victim was eventually spotted and taken to UC Davis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead hours later.
Witnesses said Basra drowned after trying to save a 5-year-old relative in the American River. The young child survived.
