(AP) - Fresno Chaffee Zoo's director says the baby giraffe that died during a special event died from a neck injury after it was unable to slow down and ran into a metal wire barrier.
The male giraffe born at the Chaffee Zoo died Oct. 8 during a preview event for the new African Adventure exhibit.
Fresno Chaffee's director Scott Barton tells the Fresno Bee several animals moved into an area near the wire barrier and one started running, exciting the rest who also started running.
He says the baby giraffe, about 4 weeks old, was among the running group.
Barton says the youngster ran into the wire, got tangled up, injured his neck and then fell loose.
He says tests from a necropsy on the giraffe are not yet complete.
