Health professionals estimate the United States could save about $300 billion a year if more people took their medications correctly. Research shows nearly two-thirds of patients don’t take their medicine as prescribed.
Sarah McBane is the president of the California Pharmacists Association. She says pharmacists are in an ideal position to help fix the problem.
"There’s a lot of reasons why people don’t take their medications," she says. "And pharmacists, because that’s what we think about, will dig a little deeper sometimes to figure out those problems."
McBane says her organization is considering whether to pursue legislation or regulations that would give pharmacists a greater role in medication management.
