Costco Wholesale has submitted plans for a 150,000 square foot store and gas station at Elk Grove Boulevard and Civic Center Drive, just east of Bruceville Road.
Elk Grove Economic Development Director Darrell Doan says a new Costco store is projected to provide as much as $800,000 a year in sales tax revenue to the city and generate up to 200 full-time jobs.
"And they're [Costco] well known as being probably the best employer in the retail industry in terms of their average wages which are right around $20 per associate per hour," says Doan. "And 90 percent of their employees are benefited. So we're excited about the jobs even though they're retail jobs. They're good, solid working class jobs for this community."
He says the brand recognition helps Elk Grove too.
"A known brand bringing a store to Elk Grove sends a really strong signal to the marketplace that Elk Grove has matured to the point where its population and its demographics can support these kinds of stores," says Doan. "So we hope that pays dividends down the road by attracting other retailers."
He says the Elk Grove Planning Commission and other agencies are reviewing the application.
Doan says the process could be finished early next year and the store might be open before the end of 2016.
"I can't confirm Costco's timeline for construction, but I would anticipate they will be going all-out to get this new store open in time for the holidays 2016, October-November of next year," says Doan.
The store and gas station would be built on a 17-acre site zoned for retail warehouse, at the southeast corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and Civic Center Drive, just east of Bruceville Road.
