(AP) - Dan Delany, Sacramento man who made it his mission to help the poor, has died after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was 80.
The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1NvEoUl ) that Delany was a priest, left the priesthood after felling in love with a nun. They married, moved to Sacramento, and began feeding the hungry from the back of their van.
Their ever-expanding efforts grew into Loaves & Fishes, which started as a soup kitchen and now offers a variety of services to thousands of people in need.
Delany and his wife also protested for a variety of causes, blocking roads and storming buildings and chan
ting. They were arrested more than 30 times.
But Delany's friends also recall his lighter side as a wit and a gregarious storyteller.
Correction: Delany and his wife never left the Catholic Church.
