Update at 4:00pm: Another prospective candidate, former county supervisor and Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, said Tuesday he is not running for mayor and endorsed Steinberg.
The other declared candidate in the race, Natomas City Council member Angelique Ashby, picked up a key endorsement Tuesday as well: former Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully.
Original story: Another candidate is jumping into the race for Mayor of Sacramento. Darrell Steinberg's former chief of staff said in an e-mail to supporters that he will announce his candidacy Wednesday.
The e-mail stated that Steinberg will make the announcement at 11:30 a.m. at the Mill At Broadway, on 5th and Broadway.
Current Mayor Kevin Johnson said last week he would not seek a third term. Since Johnson's announcement, Steinberg's supporters have been urging the former California Senate President pro Tem to run for the city's top job.
When interviewed last week, Steinberg told Capital Public Radio that public service is in his blood.
"There’s no greater privilege than to serve," he said.
Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby is the only other candidate who has formally declared she will run.
