Incumbent Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh is running for a second term and faces four challengers for the job.
Among them are small business owner and former planning commissioner Ted Brandvold, Modesto City Councilman Dave Lopez, Armando Arreola who ran in 2011, and former mayor Carmen Sabatino who was charged with corruption in 2006 but was not convicted.
Also on the ballot are Measures G and I.
Marsh has been the major proponent and contributor to Measure G which would raise the sales tax by a half cent to 8.1 cents.
The new revenue raised would go toward hiring more police and code enforcement officers.
Measure I would establish an urban limit on three sides of Modesto to preserve farmland. Opponents say the measure would hurt jobs and economic development.
