Sacramento State will start construction in spring 2017 on a state-of-the-art education building with cutting-edge teaching labs for the Biology and Chemistry departments.
The California State University Board of Trustees approved the $91 million project Wednesday.
Sac State hopes to break ground on the new science building in April 2017, according to a news release from the university.
The school says the new facility would be built on a current parking lot adjacent to the Hornet Bookstore and near the University Union.
Sac State President Robert Nelsen says the new building "will provide much-needed lab space and classrooms in fields where the school is critically short on space."
"Our current science facilities are outdated and deteriorating," says Jill Trainer, dean of the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics. "We need a new building to ensure safety and the ability to offer a modern curriculum."
This is the second project of Sac State's Campus Master Plan to get underway. A 416-bed residence hall is already under contruction and is expected to be completed in time for the Fall 2017 sememester.
The campus is also planning for a 62,000-square-foot addition to the University Union with construction planned to begin in January 2017. An 1,800-space parking structure for the north end of campus is also on the drawing board.
