There are a number of apps you can install on your smartphone to help you shop and buy the right amount of food for a big meal.
Some help predict portion sizes, others suggest creative ways to re-use leftovers so you don't get tired of turkey sandwiches.
"And, then there are apps that help us understand and better explain expiration and sell-by dates so that we don't throw away food before it's actually gone bad."
Danielle Nierenberg is the president of Food Tank -- a research and food advocacy organization based in New Orleans.
She suggests the app 'Feeding Forward.' It connects consumers or businesses who have leftovers with charities. There are several apps with a similar twist.
"Waste No Food is an app that helps connects farms, restaurants, college cafeterias, grocery stores with local groups that need donations of excess food or food that would otherwise be wasted."
