Snow is coming down heavily on Donner and Echo Summits. CalTrans is reporting chain controls have been implementedfrom Drum Forebay to Truckee on Interstate 80 and from Twin to Myers on U.S. Highway 50.
On Interstate 80, westbound trucks are being stopped at Overland Trail east of Truckee to screen for possession of maximum chains. Trucks without chains are being turned around. Permit loads are prohibited over the summit at this time.
CalTrans advises motorists expect major travel delays for both chain installation and crews clearing the roadway.
The weather service is predicting up to seven inches of snow on Donner Summit and up to nine inches on Echo Summit through Friday morning.
Summit temperatures will be below freezing, resulting in icy roadway conditions.
Chains are also required in Amador County from Silver Lake to Martin Meadow.
CalTrans recommends delaying travel until after the storm. If driving is unavoidable, travel with chains and food and water.
