2:20 p.m. The Sacramento Police Department is searching for clues related to a mid-morning shooting on W Street between 9th and 10th.
Carmen Amezcua lives nearby and says she heard two bursts of gunfire at about 10:30 a.m.
"I woke up to gunshots, loud gunshots, a couple of them," she says. "And then, at the same I heard a female screaming really bad, screaming, then I heard more gunshots and the screaming stopped. So, I told my cousin, I think somebody got shot outside so she called 911. And then we came outside to see neighbors hunched over a female. And, she’s laying there bleeding and saying she couldn’t breathe, she was gonna die, so I assisted her and told her everything was gonna be okay. We’re getting her help."
Sergeant Bryce Heinlein says a woman sustained life-threatening injuries and has been taken to a local hospital. She is in critical condition.
“The suspect fled prior to officers getting there," says Heinlein. "A perimeter was set up quickly in an attempt to locate the suspect. Part of that protocol, we put two schools on lockdown – Met High School and William Land Elementary School.”
The lockdown has been lifted.
Investigators say they have not identified suspects in the case.
Amezcua says the woman was able to briefly describe what happened before paramedics took her to the hospital.
"I didn’t want her to talk too much because she was really suffering, I just wanted to keep her awake," says Amezcua. "And then I asked her if she knew who did this to her. She said ‘No.’ She just said that, ‘They robbed me.’ So, I figured that’s what happened. I left her alone. I just consoled her and told her we were getting her help. She just kept saying she couldn’t breathe. And then they finally showed up and took her away."
Crime-scene investigators and officers canvassed the area for witnesses and processed evidence left at the scene.
The Sacramento Police Department crime totals for the month of November show that area of town had the fewest incidents of robberies and aggravated assaults combined compared to the rest of the city.
