University of the Pacific is self-imposing tough sanctions on its own men's basketball team stemming from an NCAA investigation, following the earlier suspension of two players, the head coach, and an assistant coach.
UOP Athletic Director Ted Leland announced in a statement that basketball staff members had provided impermissible academic assistance to student-athletes.
Those players had enrolled in correspondence courses at other institutions to meet university and NCAA eligibility requirements.
The sanctions include:
- No post-season play for the Pacific Tigers men’s basketball team.
- Reducing the number of basketball scholarships by a total of six over three years.
- Limiting recruiting efforts.
Leland says an NCAA investigation is under way, but the most serious violations have occurred and immediate actions are warranted.
Three players were benched in early November, but one was reinstated earlier this month.
Head Coach Ron Verlin and Assistant Coach Dwight Young were suspended last week.
