Rich Ibarra reports the closure has led to the cancellation of some crab feeds and anticipated higher costs for similar events.
In Tuolumne County, the Soroptomists cancelled their crab feed, as did the Tuolumne Senior Center.
Center CEO Leon Casas says some groups are getting crab from Washington and Alaska, but the cost is higher.
"If we were to find crab, we know that the cost would be really not feasible for us to host the event."
Steve Richmond with the Stockton Host Lions expects a sellout of more than 500 guests for their February crab feed.
He says the fundraiser will likely cost more but with auctions and raffles, he hopes to come out ahead.
"Crab is obviously the lynchpin, we will be profitable, can't say it'll be as profitable as last year."
Richmond says the annual event raises $10,000 for college scholarships.
