(AP) - Parts of California remain in the grip of a cold spell.
The National Weather Service issued a hard freeze warning for much of the San Joaquin Valley through 10 a.m. Thursday.
Meteorologists say lows of 27 degrees or colder can be expected for four-to-six hours, conditions that can kill crops and sensitive vegetation, cause pipes to burst and put livestock and pets at risk of hypothermia.
In the Sacramento area, a fog advisory was in effect Thursday morning. The NWS reported cold temperatures across the interior of Northern California. As of 6 a.m., it was 28 degrees at the Sacramento International Airport and 34 degrees in Davis.
Breezy winds and the cold temperatures will make for a cold outdoor celebrations on New Year's Eve, according to forecasters.
Elsewhere, a freeze warning has been issued for interior valleys of Ventura County, and frost advisories are posted down the coast from San Luis Obispo County to the San Fernando Valley.
Frost is also expected in inland areas east-southeast of Los Angeles and eastern San Diego County.
A cold Santa Ana wind is expected New Year's Eve and Day.
