(AP) - The bicycle and pedestrian path on the Bay Bridge's new eastern span could miss its opening date this summer because of a last-minute redesign of the path's terminus.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday Caltrans officials are looking into whether there is sufficient underpinning for a planned observation platform that would be built near the path's terminus at Yerba Buena Island.
Officials say that the eastern span project's chief engineer, Brian Maroney, has raised questions about the cantilever support system. The issue is whether the rods that would attach the steel arms to the bridge are strong enough.
They say redesigning the support structure again to add rods could postpone the $8-million project's completion beyond this summer.
